A replica Cartier Privé Santos is a copy of Cartier's square steel watch, a shape that traces to 1904. Replica versions sell at several tiers. A quartz model and a high-grade automatic can look the same in a photo and differ in thickness by more than 1 mm. Three things separate the tiers: the movement, the case finish, and the bracelet fit. Replica watches are not made by Cartier and do not contain Cartier movements.
The Original Watch
Louis Cartier designed the Santos for Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont in 1904. Cartier put the watch into production in 1911. The current Santos de Cartier came out in 2018. Cartier lists the large model at 39.8 mm wide and 9.08 mm thick, with the 1847 MC automatic movement and a 100 m water resistance rating. Cartier has used the Privé name since the mid-2010s for limited re-editions of historical shapes. The Santos-Dumont line is thinner, about 34 mm wide, and uses quartz in most versions.
Case Size and Thickness
Width and thickness drive the look. A replica with a 42 mm case and an 11 mm profile will not sit like a genuine 39.8 mm Santos. Measure lug-to-lug, not just width. A difference of 1 mm changes how the watch sits on a 6.75 inch wrist. Ask for caliper photos with a ruler in the frame. Those are the useful ones.
Movements
Replica Santos watches run on four movement types: Chinese quartz, Japanese quartz (Miyota), Chinese automatic copies of the ETA 2824 or 2892, and clone movements built to match a Swiss design. Quartz holds time within about 15 seconds a month. A stock automatic runs within about plus or minus 20 seconds a day. COSC-certified movements run at -4 to +6 seconds a day. Genuine Santos de Cartier watches use the Cartier 1847 MC. No replica does.
Case, Plating, and Glass
Most cases are 316L stainless steel. Some sellers offer 904L, which costs more and takes a higher polish. Gold-tone models use PVD or electroplating. Plating thickness runs from 0.5 microns on low-tier models to 5 microns on better ones. A 5 micron layer lasts years. A 0.5 micron layer wears through on the caseback and crown within months. Glass should be sapphire. Mineral glass scratches. Check the crown cabochon: Cartier uses a blue synthetic spinel. Replicas often use plastic or dyed glass.
Dial and Bracelet Details
- Roman numerals: check stroke weight and serif shape against a reference photo.
- Date window: the Santos de Cartier has a date at 6 o'clock. The Santos-Dumont has no date.
- Bezel screws: heads should sit flush with no burrs and no gap under the head.
- Bracelet: solid links hold shape. Folded links rattle. The genuine SmartLink system removes links without tools. Replicas use screw pins or split pins.
- Clasp: look for engraved text, not stamped text.
Water Resistance
Genuine Santos de Cartier models carry a 100 m rating. ISO 22810 covers that testing. Most replicas are not pressure tested. A number printed on a caseback does not mean the gaskets were tested. Treat any replica as splash resistant.
Legal Status in the US
18 U.S.C. § 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. US Customs and Border Protection can seize shipments. Buying a replica for personal use is not the same charge as selling one, but the goods remain unauthorized copies of a registered trademark.
Before You Buy
- Ask for case width, thickness, and lug-to-lug in millimeters.
- Ask which movement is inside: quartz, Miyota, or an automatic clone.
- Ask for plating thickness on gold-tone models.
- Confirm sapphire glass, not mineral.
- Check the return policy and the payment method.
