The short answer
Buy the real one. If the retail price stings, buy it pre-owned. The Speedmaster Apollo 8 is a black ceramic watch with a dial carved by laser, and no copy I have handled matches it once it sits on your wrist. Replicas photograph well. In daylight, at arm's length, they do not hold up.
Where the copies give themselves up
Case material
Omega builds this reference from solid black ceramic, 44.25mm across. Most fakes take a steel case and coat it black. That changes everything downstream. Coated steel feels heavier and colder on the wrist. The lugs read rounded where the real ones stay sharp. Pushers and crown should be ceramic with clean machined edges, and on copies they often look like plastic or paint. Tap the case with a fingernail. Ceramic answers with a thin, glassy click. Coated steel thuds.
The dial
This is the hard part to copy. Omega laser-ablated the dial so the lunar surface sits at different depths, with craters that catch and hold shadow. Copies print the texture or stamp it shallow. Tilt the watch under a lamp. A genuine dial has real relief and the light moves across it. A fake looks flat, and often a little glossy. Look at the APOLLO 8 text below twelve. Genuine lettering is even and sharp. On copies the strokes thicken or the spacing drifts.

Crystal and caseback
Both sides of the sapphire get anti-reflective treatment on the original. Fakes treat one side, so the crystal throws more reflections and washes out the dial. The caseback engraving of the lunar far side should be deep and crisp. On copies it is shallow, and the caseback itself is metal rather than ceramic.

Paperwork and photos
Ask for a video, not stills. Ask for the warranty card with a serial that matches the caseback. Ask the seller to put the watch on a scale. Anyone who will not send those three things is telling you something without saying a word.
If the real thing is out of reach
Three honest paths:
- Pre-owned genuine, full set with box and papers. Best value in the reference by a wide margin.
- Standard Moonwatch, 3570.50 or the current 3861. Less money, same dial template, no ceramic case.
- A legitimate homage from a known brand. Sold as a homage, priced like one, no pretending.
What none of those options include is a watch sold as a 1:1 copy of someone else's design. That is the one pick I would skip.
