Short answer

A replica IW371416 V1 is a copy of an IWC Portuguese Chronograph. The V1 tag comes from the factory and the dealer, not from IWC. It marks the first production batch of that reference. Factories issue V2, V3 and later batches after they retool. A V1 is not always worse than a later batch, and the label is not standardized. A V1 from one factory and a V1 from another are different watches.

What the original reference is

IW371416 belongs to the IWC Portuguese Chronograph family, model line IW3714. The family uses a 40.9 mm case, a bi-compax dial with subdials at 12 and 6 o'clock, and caliber 79350. That caliber is a Valjoux 7750 base with a chronograph module, 28,800 vph, about 44 hours of power reserve. Water resistance is 30 m. Case thickness is about 12.3 mm.

IWC reference lists do not describe the dial and hand variant of IW371416 the same way in every source. Confirm the dial color, numeral finish and hand shape for your target reference before you compare a replica against it. If a seller cannot name the dial variant, treat the listing as unconfirmed.

Checks on a V1 unit

  • Case thickness. Measure with calipers. A replica built on a 7750 base often runs 13.5 mm to 14 mm instead of 12.3 mm.
  • Subdial spacing. The centers of both subdials should sit on the vertical center line of the dial, spaced the same as the original.
  • Dial printing. Compare the position, size and weight of IWC, SCHAFFHAUSEN and AUTOMATIC against photos of the reference.
  • Hands. Leaf shape, and tips that reach the minute track. Short hands are a common fault.
  • Crystal. Sapphire with a slight dome. Some cheaper batches ship mineral glass.
  • Caseback. Engraving depth and font. V1 casebacks are often shallow.
  • Pushers. Start and stop should give a firm click. Reset should snap the chronograph hand back to zero.
  • Movement. Ask for photos of the movement and rotor engraving. A decorated rotor does not prove a Swiss base.

Where V1 batches fall short

First batches carry the errors that later batches correct. On Portuguese Chronograph replicas the common V1 faults are a thick case, subdials set too close together, thin dial printing and short hands. Some units ship with a strap that is far from the original leather in grain and thickness.

Questions for the seller

  1. Case diameter and thickness, measured with calipers.
  2. Movement type, and whether the chronograph functions.
  3. Macro photos of the dial and the printing.
  4. Photos of the caseback, clasp and strap.
  5. Return policy for a watch that arrives with a fault.

Limits

No replica matches the original movement. Caliber 79350 is a Swiss base. Replica movements are Asian. A replica is not water resistant to 30 m in practice. Keep it away from water. Resale value is close to zero. The V1 label has no registry, so it tells you the batch, not the quality.
