Short answer
IWC does not list a reference IW938. IWC reference numbers use the letters IW plus six digits, for example IW356501 for a Portofino Automatic 40 mm. The code IW938 has three digits. Treat it as seller shorthand, not a factory model number. Ask the seller which six-digit reference the replica copies.
What the Portofino line is
IWC added the Portofino in 1984. The design follows a pocket watch case: round body, thin bezel, straight lugs, leather strap. Current groups are the Automatic 37 mm, Automatic 40 mm, Chronograph 42 mm and Hand-Wound Eight Days 45 mm. Movements include calibers 32111, 35100 and 59210. Water resistance runs 30 m to 50 m. Crystals are sapphire.
Reference numbers in the line
- IW356501: Portofino Automatic, 40 mm, steel case, silver dial.
- IW356505: same case, black dial.
- IW391007: Portofino Chronograph, 42 mm.
- IW516401: Portofino Hand-Wound Eight Days, 45 mm.
Numbers change with dial color, case metal and strap. A listing that gives one code for six variants gives no code.
What 1:1 means in listings
1:1 is a marketing term with no standard. Two sellers use it for watches with different cases. A 1:1 claim says nothing about movement, finishing or tolerance. Judge the watch by measurements and photos.

Points to check
- Case diameter. Ask for a caliper photo. The 40 mm models measure 40.0 mm to 40.2 mm. A 41 mm case is a different watch.
- Lug width. Portofino Automatics take 20 mm straps. Chronographs take 20 mm or 21 mm by reference.
- Case thickness. The Automatic 40 mm sits near 9.3 mm. A 12 mm case sits high on the wrist.
- Movement beat rate. 28,800 vph gives a smooth sweep. 21,600 vph points to a cheaper caliber.
- Date window. Print quality and position at 3 o'clock.
- Dial print. Letter spacing on IWC and SCHAFFHAUSEN, index feet, logo height.
- Caseback engraving depth and text.
- Crown thread and gasket. Ask if the crown screws down and if water resistance is stated.
Price tiers in listings
Low grade runs $80 to $150, with a 21,600 vph movement and mineral glass. Mid grade runs $250 to $450, with a clone of an ETA 2824 or a Miyota 9015 and a sapphire crystal. High grade runs $500 to $800, with better case finishing and a Swiss or Japanese movement. These ranges come from marketplace listings, not from a survey.
Open points
No public source confirms an IWC model numbered IW938. Photos of the caseback, the movement and a caliper shot answer more than the code does.
