Short answer

An imitation IWC dive watch is a third-party copy of an IWC Aquatimer or Ocean 2000. The case, dial, and bezel follow the original. The movement does not. Check four numbers before you pay: case diameter, depth rating, lug width, and power reserve. On a 42 mm Aquatimer Automatic, a correct copy reads 42 mm across, 22 mm between the lugs, and 300 m on the dial.

Which IWC dive models get copied

  • Aquatimer 1967. IWC's first dive watch. Internal rotating bezel. Cushion case.
  • Ocean 2000, Ref. 3500. 1982. Designed with Porsche Design. Titanium case. Rated to 2,000 m.
  • Aquatimer Automatic 42 mm, Ref. IW3288. Steel or titanium. 300 m. Caliber 32111. 120-hour power reserve.
  • Aquatimer Chronograph 44 mm. Two counters and a date window at 3.

Specs to compare

Case

Measure the case with a caliper, not a ruler. Check lug to lug length and case height. A copy that runs 1 mm thick sits high on the wrist and shows under a cuff.

Bezel

IWC uses the SafeDive system on current Aquatimer models. IWC describes the bezel as moving when the crown is pressed. A copy that spins free does not match the original. Count the clicks from 12 to 3 and compare with a photo of the original.

Dial and lume

Aquatimer dials use applied indices and a triangle at 12. Lume is Super-LumiNova. Charge the dial under a lamp for 30 seconds and compare the glow color on the dial and the bezel pip. A mismatch is common on low-tier copies.

Movement

IWC caliber 32111 runs 120 hours. Most copies run 38 to 42 hours on a full wind. Ask for the movement name and the measured power reserve. A seller who cannot name the movement cannot support the watch.

Water resistance

Ask for a pressure test result with a date. Many copies ship without a test. Treat any dive rating on a copy as unverified until a shop tests it.

Checks before payment

  • Weight in grams. Titanium copies run lighter than steel copies.
  • Crown threads. Wind the crown in and out ten times.
  • Depth text. Compare font weight and spacing on the 300 m or 2,000 m print.
  • Engraving between the lugs. Reference and serial should sit deep and sharp.
  • Bracelet screws. Check that each link uses a proper screw, not a pin.

Price bands

Entry copies run $150 to $300. Mid copies run $300 to $600 with a clone movement and sapphire. Top 1:1 builds run $600 to $1,200. IWC lists the steel Aquatimer Automatic well above $5,000 at retail, so the gap between copy and original is wide at every tier.

What a copy cannot match

Movement finishing, warranty, and service. IWC services its own calibers through its own network. A copy has no service chain and no resale value. Buy a copy as a look, not as an asset.
