The Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary is reference 310.20.42.50.01.001. Omega released it in 2019 to mark 50 years since the Apollo 11 landing. Production stopped at 6,969 pieces. Replicas of this reference exist in several grades. None of them run the Omega Caliber 3861. That one fact explains most of the visible and hidden gaps between a genuine watch and a fake.

Genuine specs to compare against

  • Case: stainless steel, 42 mm diameter.
  • Bezel: Moonshine gold ring with a burgundy ceramic insert and gold tachymeter numerals.
  • Dial: black, three sub-dials at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock, applied hour markers, sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides.
  • Caseback: sapphire display back with an Apollo 11 mission patch motif and the limited edition number.
  • Movement: Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 3861, manual wind, 50 hour power reserve, METAS certified, co-axial escapement, silicon balance spring.
  • Water resistance: 50 m.
  • Box set: steel bracelet, extra strap, travel case, certificate. Packaging details vary by market.

Where replica versions differ

Bezel insert material. The genuine insert is burgundy ceramic. Most replicas use aluminium or a coated ceramic disc. The color shifts toward orange under warm light. Tachymeter numerals sit shallow and lose the gold tone.

Sub-dial layout. A Valjoux 7750 type movement puts a sub-dial at 12 o'clock and the running seconds at 9. The genuine watch uses 3, 6 and 9. Any listing with a sub-dial at 12 holds the wrong movement.

Caseback. Genuine engraving has depth and a blackened fill. Replica engraving is laser etched, thin, and often off center. The limited edition number is stamped on some replicas and absent on others.

Crystal and case. Genuine sapphire carries anti-reflective coating on two sides. Many replicas coat one side, which leaves a blue or purple cast on the dial. Case lug profiles get softened by polishing.

Movements found in replicas

  • Quartz. Battery powered. The chronograph seconds hand ticks once per second. Asking prices sit under $100.
  • Seagull ST19. Hand wound, 3-6-9 layout, no date. Closest layout match at low cost. The sweep is not as smooth as the 3861.
  • Valjoux 7750 type automatic. Sub-dial at 12 o'clock. Wrong layout for this reference.
  • Decorated hand-wind. Top tier sellers fit a hand-wound movement with a 3861 style bridge finish. The finish is cosmetic. There is no co-axial escapement and no silicon balance spring.

Checks before you buy

  1. Count the sub-dial positions. Reject a piece with a sub-dial at 12.
  2. Ask for a photo of the caseback and the movement through the crystal.
  3. Run the chronograph. Start, stop, reset. The reset should return the hand to 12 in one press.
  4. Check the crystal for a color cast against a white background.
  5. Check that the end links sit flush against the lugs.
  6. Ask if the watch was tested for water resistance. Most replicas are not.

What photos cannot settle

Lume brightness and color, insert material, movement finish, and water resistance. Supplier photos are lit and retouched. Case thickness and bracelet weight figures in listings are copied from Omega spec sheets in many cases. No replica carries METAS certification. No replica carries a serial that appears in the Omega database. If you cannot handle the watch before payment, ask for a video with the chronograph running and a scale shot of the caseback.
