IWC lists calibre 89361 as an automatic chronograph with a flyback function, a 68-hour power reserve and a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. It appears in Ingenieur and Aquatimer chronograph models. Replica IWC chronographs do not use that movement. Most replica chronographs use an ETA or Valjoux 7750 pattern movement or a Seagull chronograph. The 7750 pattern runs at 28,800 vph. The Seagull runs at 21,600 vph. Neither has flyback.
Six checks on a replica sold as IW93861
- Full reference and case back photo. Genuine references are stamped on the case back and between the lugs.
- Movement photo. Look at the balance wheel, the rotor engraving and the cam or column wheel layout.
- Flyback test. Start the chronograph, then press reset while it runs. A flyback hand snaps to zero and restarts. A 7750 pattern or Seagull movement cannot do this.
- Case thickness. Measure it with calipers and compare the number with the spec sheet of the model the seller names. Replica cases hold a spacer and run thicker than the genuine watch.
- Dial print. Check the weight and spacing of the word Schaffhausen and the alignment of the date window with the dial ring.
- Weight. Weigh the watch on a kitchen scale. A steel IWC chronograph on a bracelet is heavy. A hollow bracelet with thin links feels light and rattles.
Price band
Replica IWC chronograph listings fall between $200 and $600 for most movements and finishes. Genuine IWC steel chronographs sell new from about $6,500 to above $12,000. A listing at $2,000 fits neither band. That gap is the clearest sign that the reference number is invented.
