Audemars Piguet has no reference 205. The brand numbers its watches with four digits, sometimes followed by letters and two more digits, such as 5402ST or 26240OR. A three-digit "205" label comes from replica sellers. It marks a production batch, not a watch model.

What AP reference numbers look like

Audemars Piguet was founded in 1875 in Le Brassus, Switzerland. The Royal Oak arrived in 1972 under reference 5402ST, a steel watch with an octagonal bezel and eight visible screws. Later families keep the same format: 15202, 15500, 15703, 16202, 26331. Letters after the digits show the metal. ST means stainless steel, OR means pink gold, BA means yellow gold. A real reference resolves to a spec sheet with case size, caliber and production years. The number 205 resolves to nothing in the AP catalog or in auction archives.

Where batch codes come from

Counterfeit workshops in Guangzhou and Shenzhen group output by internal codes. Buyers on forums see labels such as "205" or "ZF 205" used to separate one run from another. The code can change with no change to the outside of the watch. It says nothing about factory origin, movement or finish.

Checks that apply to a Royal Oak

  • Case back: genuine watches carry an engraved reference, a serial number and a Swiss hallmark. The two numbers must match AP service records.
  • Movement: the Royal Oak 5402 runs caliber 2121. Copies put a decorated automatic or a quartz module behind the rotor.
  • Dial: tapisserie squares are cut into the plate, not printed on it. Printed pattern looks flat under 10x magnification.
  • Weight: a steel Royal Oak on a full bracelet carries more mass than a plated brass copy of the same case size.
  • Price: auction results for the 5402ST sit in the tens of thousands of dollars and higher. An offer near $500 is not a genuine watch.

Legal facts

Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the United States. U.S. Customs and Border Protection publishes annual intellectual property seizure statistics that include watches and jewelry. Selling a copy as a genuine item is trademark infringement and can bring civil damages. Audemars Piguet runs its own authentication service and refuses service on counterfeits.
